Kim Sorensen
B.F.A., B.Ed., Licentiate ISTD (Tap)
Kim is the Artistic Director/Owner of the Sorensen School of Dance. With a diverse background in dance and education, Kim holds a multitude of credentials. Kim is a graduate of York University, North York, Ontario, and holds a Specialized Honours Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree majoring in Dance. She holds a Bachelor of Education from Memorial University, Newfoundland and Labrador. As well,Kim holds Licentiate Designation with the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing in Tap. This designation marks the first and only time a dance teacher in Newfoundland and Labrador has been awarded this designation in Tap. Kim also completed the Advanced 2 Tap exam in 2001.
Kim has attended the ISTD Teacher Summer School in England on many occasions (2019, 2015, 2012, 2007, 2004, 1999). In 2010 Kim attended the Pulse Teacher Workshop in NYC to further broaden her training in American Tap and attended the Grade 2 & 3 teacher refresher course with the ISTD. The summer of 2013, December 2014 and July 2015, Kim studied tap classes at Broadway Dance Centre in New York City. The summer of 2015 Kim also attended the Grade 4 ISTD Teacher Refresher course in Oakville, Ontario. The summer of 2018 Kim attended the new ISTD Intermediate Tap course held in Bradford, Ontario. In July 2018 Kim also flew to Montreal to become certified to teach Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT). Most recently, August 2023, Kim was back at Broadway Dance Centre in NYC taking tap classes.
The key to a successful teacher and dance school is the careful blending of dance training and education coupled with professional instruction. As a teacher, professional development through continued training and exposure is key.
The blend of Academic excellence and Dance training coupled with continual professional development by studying many summers over the last 37 years, has been integral to Kim's personal growth as a dance teacher and studio owner. Still loving my job and the many wonderful students I teach every year!!!
